Obama supporters won the sign war hands down today at the Harkin Steak Fry in beautiful, sun-dappled Indianola Iowa. Here's my good friend Paul Tewes, smiling as his staffers from all over the state converge on one of the tents where Harkin supporters were eating their steak dinners.
Sign wars are simply that: signs. What really matters are the people there to hold the signs, chant the chants, and walk the walk. And once again, Tewes had the magic. Here's video showing a long line of Obama supporters marching into the Indianola balloon field, chanting and having a great time.
I was also fortunate enough to run right into Governor Bill Richardson as he made his way around with a small band of supporters.
There were six candidates represented: Obama, Hillary, Richardson, Edwards, Biden and Dodd. Each was alloted a 15 minute time slot. Nearly everyone mentioned Iraq, and specifically how they would get the troops out if they became president.
I was gratified to see so many people in Iowa to support our beloved Senator Harkin. He really is an icon. This summer when I was in Washington DC on the 21st Century Forum trip, each and every senator and congressman we met told us how lucky we are to have such a hard working senator here in Iowa.
The Steak Fry is really demonstrates how big the tent of the democratic party is. There is every imaginable booth, from people wanting to save Darfur
(my friend Tim Gannon) to costumed supporters of every size and shape imaginable. Throw in about 200 members of the media from all over the country and the world, and you have a real party!

I plan to caucus for Bill Richardson so I was thrilled to see your post with Bill's picture in it. He is a great candidate that I urge all to take a closer look at and hear him speak if you get the opportunity. I too was at the Steak Fry and I just want to comment that all the Democratic candidates gave outstanding speeches and I could support anyone of them if they become the parties candidate. I was disappointed that the Obama and Clinton supporters did not have the curtesy to stay and listen to the other candidates speeches. It was embarassing to see the mass exit during the next candidates speech. Come and show your support for your candidate but please show respect to the other candidates and take the time to listen to their speeches. Joe Biden was the last speaker of the day and gave a very powerful and moving speech. Those that left early missed an opportunity to hear a great speech from a great senator.
