A federal judge (those who seem to have more common sense than legislators these days) has overturned a law set to go into effect tomorrow that would have effectively closed two large abortion clinics in Missouri. The law basically causes the physical space inside clinics to mimic that of an ambulatory surgical center, even though all of the abortion in one clinic are all medication induced, not surgical. The renovations required (like widening hallways) will cause the clinics to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and be closed for months while the modifications take place.
The law is based on a false premise. It states that all facilities who provide abortions must be prepared to also do surgeries as well, "in case anything goes wrong." Well, if that is the case, then a Dr. at a small practice who is lancing a boil must also put in a surgical suite. Nevermind that the Dr. would probably transfer the patient to the hospital to perform the surgery.
This is just another attempt to limit the rights of women to obtain legal. safe abortions. Lawmakers throw sand in women's faces at every turn to make it harder and harder. I wish they would put as much effort in to birth control availability and sex education. There would be less abortions and therefore fewer clinics to remodel.
