New polling shows that President Bush's job approval rating is at an all-time low and finds that even his most rabid republican base is abandoning him.
According to the polls, republican support has eroded around the issue of immigration and the perceived "amnesty" provision.
It seems our republican friends are once again entirely missing the point.
The word amnesty is defined as follows in Webster:
Etymology:
- Greek amnēstia forgetfulness, from amnēstos forgotten
: the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals
The Immigration bill proposed by Congress is not an amnesty bill. It requires that immigrants make back tax payments and pay a penalty to the U.S. government.
I wish those same republicans would have been paying attention when they elected George W. Bush. He talked about immigration reform in his stump speeches, it was all out there. Somehow, they just saw what they wanted to see and ignored the things they didn't want to see.
I guess his poll numbers are now reflecting the reality. Bush is a simpleton trying to perform a very complicated job. And it's not working.
